Each year, HCF gathers statistics to monitor trends in the provision of funding
private health care services. The information – provided for hospital and ancillary
care – includes trends in the types of health care provided, average costs and
number of patients. Manchester Unity data is not included in this year’s report.

Highlights of funding private health care services:
- The total number of
admissions to hospital for the
year increased by 21,257 to
273,694 admissions
- 11,000 more members were
admitted to hospital this
year, totalling over 154,000
members
- total number of members
admitted to same day hospital
increased 10%, to 97,626
- 63% of all hospital admissions
were for same day procedures
and represented 20% of all
charges
- 82% of members’ total
hospital admissions were in
a private hospital, with 18%
in a public hospital
- 98% of all hospital admissions
were provided in an HCF
(HPPA) network hospital
- the average private hospital
charge per admission was
$2,385, a 4.4% increase
on last year
- The average benefit paid
on behalf of the 200 highest
cost claimants was $105,162.
